As part of the total Public Health quality improvement process to improve public health services and make the public health system more accountable, for much of the past year the N.C. divisions of Public Health (Department of Health and Human Services) and Environmental Health (Department of Environment and Natural Resources) piloted a public health accreditation process. The pilot process concluded in February 2007 with an excellent review from a team of national experts. This is the first state-level accreditation initiative undertaken in the United States.
The purpose of the pilot state-level accreditation was to fulfill recommendations of the 2004 Public Health Task Force. It is a companion effort to the initiative to accredit local health departments across the state, begun in 2005.
