Naturally Occurring Asbestos Sites in N.C.Exposure to asbestos can increase the risk to the public for certain diseases including some cancers. The potential for human exposure to asbestos would be greater when materials are disturbed. Activities that could disturb naturally occurring asbestos include the cutting of new roads, excavation, chipping or hammering on rocks containing asbestos, sifting dry materials and/or other activities that may cause the release of asbestos fibers into the air. It is important to determine whether naturally occurring asbestos is present before conducting such activities. If a site is found to contain asbestos, steps should be taken to minimize exposure to the public and workers. Preliminary screening was completed by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources for 50 sites currently identified. Forty six of the sites were part of the United States Geological Survey, "Survey’s Open File Report 2005-1189". Four additional sites were screened and added to the report below. Please note that there could be other naturally occurring asbestos sites that have yet to be discovered.
