Coding in the HIS uses one of two schemes - CPT codes and ICD codes. These codes are commonly used by Medicare and Medicaid
, as well as hospitals and vital statistics. International Classification of Disease (ICD)
codes are generally used to describe medical conditions, such as diabetes or prolapsed cord. The ICD coding was developed by the World Health Organization. Current Procedural Terminology (CPT)
codes were developed by the American Medical Association. The CPT is a listing of descriptive terms and identifying codes for reporting medical services and procedures.
